Montreal Hotel Benchmark Score
An objective, data-driven analysis of hotels in Montreal. We use a proprietary Hotel Benchmark Score (HBS) to evaluate hotels based on guest experience, value, and amenities.
Top 15 Montreal Hotels (by HBS Score)
About Our Index
The Hotel Benchmark Score (HBS) is a composite score designed to provide a holistic view of a hotel's quality and value.
We use scaling to convert each hotel's raw data (e.g., guest rating, price) into a 0-100 score relative to its peers. This prevents metrics with wider ranges from unfairly dominating the final score.

Rating Methodology
Our Hotel Benchmark Score (HBS) is calculated to provide a comprehensive measure of a hotel's quality and value proposition to guests.
HBS Score Components & Weighting
The total HBS score is a weighted average of four components, each scaled to a 0-100 score to ensure comparability.
- Value Score (35%): A score derived from the hotel's average price per night. To ensure fairness, lower prices result in higher scores. This component is inverted during scaling.
- Guest Rating Score (30%): Based on aggregated guest ratings from major booking platforms. This reflects real-world guest satisfaction.
- Location Score (20%): A score based on the hotel's proximity to major attractions, public transport, and dining, rated on a 1-10 scale.
- Amenities Score (15%): A score reflecting the quality and quantity of amenities offered, such as a pool, gym, free WiFi, and on-site dining, rated on a 1-10 scale.
Mean Scaling
A simple weighted average can be misleading. To solve this, we use a two-step scaling process:
- Normalization (0-100 Scale): For each of the four components, we analyze the range of scores across all hotels in our database. Each hotel's raw score is then scaled to a value between 0 and 100. For the Value Score, the scaling is inverted (lowest price gets 100, highest gets 0). For all other scores, a hotel with the lowest raw score receives a 0, the highest receives a 100, and all others are scaled proportionally.
- Mean Adjustment (Target Mean of 70): After calculating an initial HBS score based on the weighted average of the scaled components, we calculate the mean of all these scores across all hotels. We then apply a linear adjustment to every hotel's score to shift the overall average to a target of 70. This final step standardizes the index, making 70 the benchmark for a "strong" performance within the Montreal context.
